Pixian doubanjiang – or douban jiang – is a fiery hot chilli bean paste, from Pixian in China’s Sichuan province. Famed for its chilli heat and umami-rich fermented beans, the pixian hot bean paste is a key ingredient in many Sichuan dishes.

If you prefer your Pixian chilli bean paste with no monosodium glutamate or preservatives, there is another Pixian Chilli Bean Paste – No MSG by the same producer. The alternative product is a deeper brown colour and has a smoother, more blended texture. This chili bean paste is a richer red, with more noticeable chilli pieces.
